The International Scooter Association hosted its first competition in Canada at the Town Park Centre in Coquitlam, B.C. on Sunday.

About 100 competitors showed off their tricks at the competition in three divisions: beginner, intermediate and professional.

According to the association, professional scooter riding is becoming an increasingly popular action sport.

"It's probably outgrowing skateboarding right now two to one," said Steve Lock, one of the event organizers.

As with any action sport, scooter riding does have risks involved.

"If you fall on the concrete, it hurts," said Jai Walker, one of the professional competitors. "I slide on my elbows a lot — and my face."

The event was the Western Canada qualifying competition for regional finals in Las Vegas on May 30.

The top winner in the professional division directly qualified for the association's world championship in Barcelona in June, where an estimated 50,000 spectators will watch the event live.

The Eastern Canada qualifying competition will take place next week in Toronto.
